This chapter provides an overview of the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on assessment practices in higher education with a specific focus on HyFlex learning environments. It provides an overview of AI in higher education with a particular emphasis on online assessment. Moreover, it discusses the potential of AI to automate assessment, its connection to personalized learning and assessment analytics, and the aspects of authenticity that AI can or cannot yet address. Further, the implementation of AI in assessment is critically evaluated, and a conclusion, along with implications for research and practice, is developed. A focus lies on Generative AI, a specific form of AI that can create seemingly new content. This chapter highlights how AI can support flexibility in assessment and hybrid learning opportunities in higher education while also discussing the remaining challenges.
