Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are online courses with free and open registration that allow for large participant groups over the internet. While capturing the essential elements, this definition reflects only a narrow conceptual consensus, as MOOCs show significant diversity in terms of content and format. Following a brief historical overview, the first section provides a working definition of MOOCs and describes their main characteristics, variations, and underlying technology. Subsequently, the fundamentals of instructional design for MOOCs are discussed.
